Job Description 

Hundred Acre Wood Forest Preschool is looking for a chef to create a rotating weekly menu and prepare a variety of healthy and nutritious snacks and lunches for our program participants.  We are looking for someone who is passionate about feeding young children local, seasonal, nutritious food and is creative with flavours and variety.  The ideal candidate will have experience preparing and serving food from scratch for over 20 people and will be open to feedback and ideas from colleagues.  The position is very autonomous - there is only one cook in the kitchen. We look for candidates who are flexible, able to problem solve, and have a good team ethic.  Our kitchen space is small but lovely, bright windows and fresh air.  

     

We are a licensed non-profit preschool centre in Heathcote ON.  We have a capacity of 5 toddlers (one class) and 16 preschoolers (2 classes).  We are situated on 100 acres of meadow and forested land, with an indoor facility that reflects our outdoor learning philosophy.  

 

The cook will prepare daily morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack for program participants according to a menu that meets Canada’s Food Guide and program policies and procedures.  The cook will also have the opportunity to engage with children and build relationships with children and staff.

Duties

  • Prepare 2 snacks and lunch daily for the program according to all guidelines and health and safety policies given 

  • Create a rotating weekly menu that is nutritious, free of processed foods, and includes local ingredients and ingredients from the school gardens.  

  • Work as part of the Hundred Acre Wood Team 

Expectations

Requirements

  • Experience in a commercial kitchen/food service establishment

  • Food Handlers Certification 

  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification

  • A clear Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening done within the past 12 months

  • The ability to create a menu according to Canada’s Food Guide and centre policies and procedures

  • Ability to multi-task in the kitchen and to find work efficiencies

  • Must be physically able to assist children as required – (eg. Lifting, getting up and down from the floor frequently)

  • Must have a working knowledge of centre policies and procedures and adhere to them at all times

  • The ability to provide outstanding customer service to children and parents 

  • An affinity for the natural world – either some education in this field or self-education and experience is an asset
